Summer 2000
New Mexico trail users are feeling the effects of severe drought. The 42,000-acre Cerro Grande fire in Los Alamos prompted the closure of a 116-mile trail system on USFS land adjacent to Los Alamos. The trails will remain closed indefinitely. E-mail NM State Rep Charlie Ervin ( ) for more info. New Mexico's Trail Partners Club is looking for an enthusiastic rider to represent the Albuquerque mountain biking community at future USFS meetings concerning trail planning and access. If interested, call Bub Hufnagel at (505) 294-9285.
In Colorado, Wheat Ridge Cyclery and Trail Conservation Services (http://home.netcom.com/~gonzales/tcs/) have teamed to improve multiple use natural surface trails. The project - called the Summer of Trails 2000 - involves trail work at many different locations. After each of the projects, volunteers will be entered into a drawing to win a mountain bike and other prizes from Wheat Ridge Cyclery. Contact Tom Nichols (303) 660-6902 for info.
The Routt County Riders of Steamboat Springs received a RockShox/IMBA Club Assistance grant to fund the construction of a new trail and re-route of the Lower Bear Trail.
The western slope of Colorado is enjoying a new singletrack addition to the Kokopelli Trail system thanks to efforts by COPMOBA (www.copmoba.com). The club will soon start work on a new beginner's loop and a muti-use bridge on the Tabeguache Trail.
