Roadless In California
In response to the letter in Spring '00 ITN entitled "Roadless in California": I don't feel Clinton's roadless initiative should be supported. What affects ORV's can potentially affect mountain biking. We shouldn't separate based on motor vs. non-motor. The real issue is equal and fair access for all U.S. citizens, not just a limited number. This country was founded on freedom, which includes not shutting out others from doing something because you don't understand it or don't participate in it yourself.

Trail Care Crew in the Desert
Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City, NV, is a unique venue for mountain biking. We have many miles of singletrack - designed specifically for mountain bikers - winding through the desert terrain and beautiful canyons.
These trails are part of a 4,000-acre mountain bike park that was born after a municipal-corporate-trail community battle. A pending golf course was threatening some outstanding mountain bike terrain.
When the different parties were working together in the initial stages, there was a lack of understanding. City staff was hesitant to work with the cycling community. We left the meetings frustrated.
This changed when the IMBA Trail Care Crew came to visit Boulder City. They rode the trails and shared camaraderie with local mountain bikers. Furthermore, they attended meetings with our city staff and council members. They were able, with just the right words, to bring the different parties together. Boulder City provided different land for a trails system, and the MGM Grand provided a $50,000 grant to fund the project. The Trail Care Crew's experience was very evident, and it has helped make our trail system a reality. IMBA, you are number one in our hearts!

IMBA Epics Details
How do I sign up for one of the IMBA Epic celebration rides? Where can I get more information about each of the Epic selections so I can ride a few during my upcoming vacations?
Marcus Hurl
Plano, TX
The focus of the IMBA Epics program is the selection of great adventure rides ‹ half-day marathons that include lots of climbing, descending and great views. These are the kind of rides that motivate mountain bike advocates to attend meetings, write letters to government agencies and newspapers, and volunteer regularly for trailwork.
We're highlighting each Epic selection with a celebration event: a two-day combo that will feature trailwork on day one and a big ride on day two. To minimize our impact on the Epic trails, we're limiting each of these rides to 50 IMBA members. Call IMBA (888-442-4622) to check Epic celebration availability.
Epics sponsor Bike Magazine (in cooperation with CamelBak, Patagonia, RockShox) has produced a sweet 16-page Epics Guide that will appear in Bike's August issue (mailed to subscribers in early June and available on the newsstand in late June). You can read all about the IMBA Epics selections in that issue and make your plans to pedal the Epics when your schedule allows. Or you can contact IMBA and ask us to send you a copy of the Epics Guide. See page 8 of this issue to get started!
