E pluribus build 'em
Hundreds of mountain bikers in the U.S. and Canada have learned the essentials of trail design, construction, and maintenance by attending one of the 12 IMBA Trailbuilding Schools. These two-day classes, hosted by IMBA affiliated clubs and sponsored in part by Specialized, combine classroom learning, on-the-trail assessment, and a full day of trail construction to prepare volunteers to become competent trail crew leaders.
Topics covered in the IMBA Trailbuilding Schools include designing sustainable trails, managing water flow, building effective trail structures, and routine trail maintenance. Tool safety and proper tool usage are also addressed, as well as tips on organizing productive volunteer trail days.
Jan and Mike Riter, the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew 1, have
taught schools this year in
Virginia, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. IMBA's Trail Care Crew 2, Joey Klein
and Kathy Summers, have been the lead instructors at IMBA Trailbuilding
Schools in Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and British Columbia.
Five one-day land manager seminars have also taken place in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. These interactive sessions have allowed trail designers, trail crew workers, and recreation planners to share ideas about trail standards, maintenance problems, and all issues that affect the trail user experience. These seminars allow the IMBA's Trail Care Crews to share cutting edge maintenance techniques, design ideas, and creative solutions that they have seen work in different parts of the country.
We'd love to have you join us at one of the seven remaining
IMBA Traibuilding Schools.
