What would we do without trails?

Fourth round of Trail Tune-Up grantwinners

IMBA Trail News
Volume 12, Number 3
August 1999

The following three mountain bike groups were selected as winners of $500 Trail Tune-Up grants for projects that will benefit trails used for mountain bike training, competition and recreational riding.

IDIDARIDE 50-mile, one-day challenge; Suwannee Bicycle Association (High Springs, Florida). SBA will build a bridge to span Bottom Bay Creek on the Mossy Ravine Trail at Big Shoals State Park, Florida. The bridge will eliminate erosion and siltation of the creek caused by a stream crossing; help establish SBA as a responsible trail organization in the eyes of the state park biologist and managers; and help maintain access for mountain bikes to this stretch of trail which is an important link for continuous singletrack in the Big Shoals area. Knobby Tire Pigeon Roast; Twin Lakes Bicycle Club (Gassville, Arkansas). T.L.B.C. was granted permission to build and maintain a network of trails on Lake Norfork (Arkansas). The club will buy trail tools, materials for switchback and stair construction, trailhead signs, and trail markers to improve an existing 10-mile stretch of trail and add an additional five miles of trail by year's end. Existing and new trail will be used in the Knobby Tire Pigeon Roast race. (Contact: Rick Zapalowski, 870-424-3037)

Eastern Shore Mountain Bike Championship; The Sports T.E.A.M. (Queen Anne, MD). Last year the Sports T.E.A.M added $1,000 of its own funds to a $500 Trail Tune-Up grant and laid 50 tons of crushed oyster shells in low-lying areas of the race course near the Chesapeake Bay. The shells worked great, controlling erosion and making the course faster, much less muddy and much more enjoyable for the racers (including a couple guys named Frank and Mark McCormack). The Sports T.E.A.M. will again match this new grant money for more oysters, less mud and erosion, and happier racers.

Trail Tune-Up Grant application deadlines for the remainder of '99 are:

August 10: Three $500 grants; application deadline - 8/10; grants awarded 9/10 (at Interbike, Las Vegas).

October 10: Three $500 grants; application deadline - 10/10; grants awarded 11/10.
