IMBA's Communications Director Gary Sprung traveled to Washington, DC, in April and met with managers of the National Park Service, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.
Sprung met briefly with National Park Service Director Robert Stanton. He discussed National Scenic Trails and the Land and Water Conservation Fund with Tom Ross, head of the NPS National Center for Recreation and Conservation. He talked about IMBA's efforts to encourage more off-road cycling in National Parks with officials in the NPS Office of Ranger Activities.
A meeting with BLM's new National Trails Coordinator Deb Smith included a discussion of the process of renewing and expanding IMBA's Memorandum of Understanding with the BLM.
Sprung met with the Forest Service's Director of Dispersed Recreation, Jim Miller. Topics of discussion included access policies on National Scenic Trails, the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum, a (possible) national certification system for trail volunteers, and ways IMBA can assist the Forest Service.
IMBA's Maryland state rep David Scull and members of MORE, the Mid-Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts, hosted Sprung for a ride and discussion on suburban DC trails.
