The Texas PayDirt program leaped ahead in 1998. More than 200 racers participated and gave close to 2,700 hours of volunteer time to maintain 32 trails in Texas, Louisianna and Oklahoma. "That's an impressive 80% jump in volunteer hours and 54% increase in number of participants over the 1997 season," wrote Jeanne Patterson, chair of the Texas Bicycle Coalition and the administrator of the PayDirt Program. "Texas mountain bike racers recognize a true champion is not just the one who rides the trails the fastest, but is one who combines that skill with a passion - a passion to ensure the future of their sport."

For 1999, the program will offer prizes for volunteers. For each 10 hours of time served, a volunteer will earn one more chance to win. "Now racers, no matter what their competitive skill level, will have the opportunity to win some really nice prizes for committing to the PayDirt Program," Patterson wrote.
