The Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) and IMBA are once again putting their resources together to hold a second annual volunteer trail camp on the weekend of November 6-8. The camp will be based out of NOC's main facilities in Wesser, North Carolina, just outside of Bryson City. Lodging, equipment and local transportation are all free (a $20 refundable deposit holds the space). The volunteers need to bring only a strong back and a few bucks for grub.
Kurt Loheit, IMBA's trail maintenance and design guru, pays a return visit to the rolling western North Carolina hills to supervise the camp. On Friday evening Loheit will get the weekend started with a slide presentation of trail work he has been involved with from California to Virginia. He will use this presentation to help outline the weekend's work: determine the usage of a trail, make a trail that is technically suited for the ex pected use, and make a trail that is aesthetically pleasing and complimentary to the area.
Saturday's work schedule calls for a full-day at Tsali Recreation Area in the Nantahala National Forest and on NOC's own trail on the Nantahala River. Projects will include new trail construction as well as restoring an existing trail that is in disrepair. Sunday is left open for riding or more trail work.
