Six IMBA-affiliated mountain bike clubs will receive IMBA Model Program awards on September 13 during the Interbike International Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The awards, which recognize mountain bike advocacy leadership and excellence, will be presented at IMBA's fifth annual Model Program Awards Breakfast.
Sarah Frost and JORBA, the Jersey Off-Road Bicycle Association, will receive an award for pioneering the innovative Pay Dirt concept that encourages mountain bike racers to give back to the sport through volunteer trailwork. The successful New Jersey initiative prompted the development of similar Pay Dirt programs in Georgia, Texas, Arizona and Colorado. IMBA's New Jersey representative Wally Tunnison came up with the Pay Dirt concept and name from his experience in motorcycle enduro racing.
The Connecticut Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) and the Connecticut Bicycle Coalition (CBC) will be honored for their work with the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) in Hartford, Connecticut. NEMBA-Connecticut and CBC preempted significant trail closures on MDC land through the development of an innovative liability management plan that included the creation of a mountain bike patrol.
Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, California (MBOSC) will be recognized for their successful efforts to raise $31,000 for the purchase of 2,300 acres of Gray Whale Ranch in Santa Cruz, California. Multi-use trails officially opened at Gray Whale last March.
The Wisconsin Off-Road Bicycling Association (WORBA) will receive an award for their exemplary membership communication programs. The club has developed a strong quarterly newsletter, The Singletrack Sentinel, and a dynamic web site (www.worba.org).
Mountain Bike Club Discovery of The Netherlands will be honored for their ongoing efforts to promote responsible mountain biking in western Europe and their leadership role in opening more than 60 miles of new trail to cyclists. Club president, Joost van der Mark was recently appointed to the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, an influential Dutch environmental protection group.
The breakfast is sponsored by IMBA benefactor Dr. Al Farrell.
