More than 50 leading U.S. mountain bike advocates gathered May 15-17 near Knoxville, Tennessee, at the 1998 IMBA Leadership Summit. The event, which was held at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, strengthened IMBA's developing network of U.S. state representatives and improved IMBA's work on behalf of mountain bikers.
IMBA is currently formalizing its state representatives network by clarifying the volunteer responsibilities and benefits of serving as a state rep. IMBA's backbone remains its individual membership of 12,500 and its network of 300 off-road cycling clubs.
Summit participants had the opportunity to ride trails near Cumberland Gap and discuss trail construction and maintenance issues with IMBA Trails Resource Director Kurt Loheit and Ric Balfour and Holly Hill of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew.
While the Leadership Summit was an invitation-only event, the outcomes of the gathering will be shared with the cycling press and IMBA's membership in the next issue of ITN.
