What would we do without trails?

Please Help IMBA Gather NPS Info

IMBA Trail News
Volume 11, Number 1
March-April 1998

As many of you may know, IMBA is working on a policy initiative with the National Park Service (NPS). IMBA Tennessee representative Walt Scarbrough has generously offered to gather information related to NPS lands that will support the development of a framework for this policy.

You can help by providing the following information about NPS-managed land near you:

  1. Name of NPS-managed park

  2. Designation (e.g., national recreation area, national historic park, wild and scenic river)

  3. Miles of unpaved roads and trails open to mountain bikes. Approximately how much, if any, is singletrack?

  4. Were any of these trails built by mountain bikers?

  5. Do you or your club members perform trail work on NPS-managed land? If so, approximately how many hours per year?

  6. Describe any other cooperative efforts you have made with NPS representatives (e.g., park transportation planning, mountain bike patrols)

  7. Contact names:

    a) name of club member who is the contact for NPS issues

    b) name of land manager/key contact for the park

  8. How would you characterize the potential for improved off-pavement bicycle access at this NPS property?

    a) hell will freeze over first

    b) some potential

    c) better than average potential

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Please email your response to Walt Scarbrough at or call Jen Lamb at IMBA at 303/545-9011. Thank you very much!
