The coalition seeking enhanced funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) succeeded last year when Congress appropriate more money than ever in the 27-year history of the fund -- more than $900 million. But much of that went to two special projects, and none went to state and local governments. We're trying again, and have gained key support from Sen. Frank Murkowski (R - AK) to bring back "state-side" funding.

IMBA is a member of the Americans for Our Heritage and Recreation coalition which includes environmentalists, park and recreation specialists, public land advocates, preservationists of cultural and historic sites, and outdoor recration goods manufacturers working to revitalize the LWCF. IMBA advocates are invited to AHR's National Summit in New Orleans on May 28-31, 1998 to discuss strategy, build long-term grassroots stewardship, and generate innovative federal, state, and local policies to carry out the American legacy of land and water conservation, recreational opportunity, and cultural preservation.

Registration for the Summit is $125 which includes attendance to all workshops and meals. Summit participants may stay at the Queen and Crescent Hotel for a discounted rate. To register, write AHR at 900 17th St. N.W., Suite 300, Washington, D, 20006 before May 15, 1998; or call Kelly O'Neal at 202/429-2606.
