The Sprockids club of Halfmoon Bay Community School in British Columbia is not only riding trails, they're building 'em. Two years ago the group designed and built their own trail: Sprockids Run. The route starts on school grounds and leads to an extensive trail system at a nearby park. The club also helps with regular trail maintenance within the park.

Halfmoon Bay Sprockids has recently received approval to build another trail. The project is a collaborative effort between the club, land owners and the regional parks and recreation department. Designed for beginner mountain bikers and hikers, the trail will be built by sixth and seventh grade club members and their parents.

The group has 45 riders from first through seventh grade, and more than 20 adult volunteers who ride every Friday after school. Support from the local bike shop, On The Edge and leaders Sue Lamb, Bob Stanhope, and Marilyn Downey have made the program a great community success story.

Club leader Laurie Short can be reached at if you'd like to learn more about Halfmoon Bay Sprockids.
