The Organization
Founded in 1988 as a coalition of California mountain bike clubs, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) has grown to become the world's largest mountain biking organization. Based in Boulder, Colorado, IMBA creates, preserves, and enhances trail opportunities for mountain bikers worldwide. IMBA has 32,000 active supporters, a network of 500 affiliated clubs, 150 corporate members, and more than 200 retailer members. This non-profit organization works closely with government agencies, is supported by many foundations, and receives significant financial resources from outside-the-bike industry companies such as Subaru of America, eBay, and L.L. Bean. IMBA has grown by virtually every measure each year since 1993--the year when IMBA established and began to support a full time, professional staff. Today, the organization has 24 employees and an annual budget of $2.1 million. IMBA is known and respected in the national and international outdoor recreation and trails communities and is regarded as a responsible, conservation-minded force that is committed to a positive future for public land.
The Position: Executive Director
IMBA seeks a compelling leader with outstanding organization-building skills and significant general management background. The Executive Director (ED) is the key spokesperson for the organization, and a visible public representative for the sport of mountain biking. IMBA's executive director guides the global recreational mountain biking movement and inspires millions of recreational mountain bikers worldwide to get involved, volunteer for trail work, and become IMBA members.
The ED reports to the Board of Directors, and will work with the Board to develop and implement a long-term new strategic plan for the organization. The selected candidate will have ultimate responsibility for day-to-day operations, financial health of the organization, staff management, advocacy and education programs, and public image. He or she will be the organization's principal in developing and maintaining relationships with industry supporters as well as with members of Congress, the executive branch of the federal government, and top officials from key federal land management agencies.
Responsibilities
- Provide essential input to the Board of Directors, assisting the Board with policy debate and decisions, directives, and reporting on the state of IMBA at Board meetings.
- Recruit, supervise and develop staff.
- Promote a professional and efficient workplace environment while maintaining the current excellent culture and camaraderie.
- Develop and execute a strategic plan in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
- Work closely with the Finance Director to develop, monitor, and manage the annual budget in accordance with the strategic plan.
- Invigorate and oversee the organization's membership recruitment and retention activities.
- Oversee and guide the organization's advocacy and education programs.
- Work closely with the Development Director in establishing and overseeing fundraising programs in both the private and public sectors.
- Represent and present IMBA at national events that will support the delivery of the mission.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key supporters in private industry.
- Work closely with the Marketing Director to coordinate IMBA's branding, advertising, press releases, Website, and newsletters
Background Required
- Significant, proven general management experience.
- Exceptional communication skills, including public speaking. IMBA's ED meets with high-level government officials, leaders of other recreation and conservation groups, and interacts regularly with the national media. IMBA's ED must be able to concisely present the organization and its work, and speak enthusiastically about the importance of IMBA's mission and the positive values of the sport of mountain biking.
- The ED must possess a track record of fundraising success and relationship building for mutual benefit -- in both the public and private sectors. IMBA's ED must be comfortable asking for money and must know how to take the necessary steps to solidify partnerships.
- The ED must demonstrate the ability to hire, manage and motivate top quality people. IMBA's culture has great sense of camaraderie and a strong commitment to advocacy. The ED must be able to provide a framework to elevate the team to the next level of professionalism without sacrificing the spirit that exists within the organization.
- We seek a candidate experienced in interacting with government officials--ideally at the federal level. Much of IMBA's access and advocacy work is conducted in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with members of Congress, the executive branch, and top officials from the key federal land agencies. Legislative and lobbying skills are central to IMBA's national work, and experience in these arenas is a plus.
- The ideal candidate will understand and respect the role of grassroots advocacy in public land policy decision-making. Many important trail access decisions are determined by local government officials and are shaped by the perspectives of local citizens and groups. The grassroots component of trail access is just as important as national legislation and agency relations.
- The ED must be able to understand and manage a complex budget and understand the essentials of non-profit organization finances.
Personal Attributes
- Possess a high level of enthusiasm for mountain biking, outdoor recreation, and conservation.
- Capable of establishing immediate credibility within the recreational mountain biking environment and within the IMBA organization.
- Possess an engaging personal style complemented by the clear-eyed analytical pragmatism necessary to take the organization to the next level.
- Exceptional sales, communication and presentation skills.
- High impact individual motivated by new challenges, with strong desire to meet and exceed goals.
- Unquestionable integrity and character.
Compensation:
The Executive Director will be awarded a base salary in the low $100,000's, plus bonuses based on achieving objectives. An excellent benefits package will also be provided.
