Ontario Trail Improvement Grants Awarded

Thanks to a partnership between the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) and the International Mountain Bicycling Association's (IMBA) Canadian office, three Ontario mountain bike clubs will receive $500 cash grants to improve local trails.

The program's goal is to support the creation and enhancement of trails for mountain bike racing and training, and to encourage clubs to take a stewardship role in their local trail communities. A percentage of every full OCA membership sold this year was used to fund the program.

Woodstock Cycling Club - Woodstock, ON

The WCC will purchase a high power trimmer to assist with the creation of new trails within "The Pines". The Pines trails are home to such races as the annual Dairy Capital Stampede, and are managed by the WCC via a land lease agreement with the Upper Thames Conservation Authority. Thinning of the forest this summer will impact nearly 15km of usable pathways.

Team Hardwood Cycling Club - Oro Station, ON

With more than 20 races on-site each year, the Hardwood Hills trail system sees a lot of wear and tear and requires ongoing maintenance and erosion control. Team Hardwood will purchase materials for hardening three downhill sections of trail that are impacted heavily by racers.

Sault Cycling Club - Sault Ste. Marie, ON

The Algoma Trail Crew, a volunteer program of the Sault Cycling Club, is working on four trail projects in 2005; the primary one being a new 10km loop adjacent to the Bellevue Valley trail system. With more than 300 hours of trailwork logged this year, the Crew will use the grant to purchase tools and equipment needed for stream crossings and erosion control on the new trail.
