The National Mountain Bike Patrol (NMBP) has changed its membership levels. The basic level is now $50, rather than $35. Here are some details about the change:

Membership Benefits: The $50 level has more benefits in 2006 than it did in 2005. We've been working diligently with BroForm.com to add this pro-deal package to the existing discounts that the patrol has through Planet Bike. This is absolutely HUGE, as prices on a wide variety of merchandise are 50-60% off retail. If a patroller buys an item worth $100, they've already compensated for the $15 dues increase. At higher membership levels, we have struck a partnership with Crank Brothers and a limited partnership with Smith Eyewear.

Funding Patrols: As you may know, most successful patrols have been able to cover some of their patrollers' costs. IMBA recently secured Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grants for educational programs and non-enforcement patrols, yielding $3.5 million dollars that can be used for this type of work. This is a huge opportunity for patrols to help subsidize individual scholarships or build flagship educational programs. We want to work with patrol leaders throughout the country to take advantage of this revenue stream.

Growing NMBP: Down the road, IMBA hopes that the NMBP's increased revenue will allow us to hire a full-time staffer for the patrol. This will give the program greater continuity, allow for more regional and national training events, help secure higher levels of sponsorship and assist patrols in taking advantage of programs like the RTP grants.

Being one of IMBA's most committed volunteer programs, it is understandable why some patrollers are concerned about the change in member levels. Rest assured that we are using your membership dollars to advance the patrol program and create greater opportunities for you and your organizations.

Thanks for everything you do for mountain biking. If it wasn't for giving people like yourselves, we wouldn't have nearly the quality or quantity of places to ride.
