More than 60 leaders of U.S. mountain bike advocacy gathered outside Austin, Texas, Feb. 11-13, for the second-ever IMBA State Representative Summit. The summit, held at Flat Creek Ranch in Texas hill country, helped strengthen IMBA's network of state representatives and improve IMBA's work on behalf of mountain bikers.

The 2000 State Representative Leadership Summit featured sessions on how to:

  1. Be an effective advocate.
  2. Work with land managers and other trail users.
  3. Recruit volunteers and nurture them.
  4. Develop and sustain mountain bike clubs.
  5. Diffuse typical anti-bike arguments.
  6. Mobilize IMBA's network.
  7. Raise money for advocacy.

Summit participants also had the chance to ride the outstanding trails at Flat Creek Ranch, including a nine-mile singletrack loop featuring nearly 1,000 feet of elevation change.

IMBA executive director Tim Blumenthal said, "This summit was the congress of U.S. mountain bike advocacy. The participants are the people leading the effort to open trails. They are capable folks who are doing a tremendous amount of volunteer work that benefits mountain bikers everywhere."

The next state reps summit is slated for 2002.
