Local mountain bikers will soon have a safe, sanctioned facility to indulge their passion -- and they're helping to build it themselves.
This weekend, armed with chainsaws, logs, hammers and truck-loads of woodchips, some 50 enthusiasts will converge on a 8.4-acre site in the Credit Valley to blaze a trail.
The facility is located on the north side of Hwy. 403 between the railroad tracks and Culham Trail.
The construction of Challenge Park, which will wind through a hydro corridor off the Culham Trail, is a joint venture between the City, community cyclists and the Action Sport Coalition.
The new park will be geared towards beginning and intermediate riders.
"It's a first of its kind," said Joanne Uhlmann, sports administrator for the City of Mississauga, and an accomplished cyclist herself. "There isn't another municipality in the region, that I know of, that has something like it."
Presently, mountain bikers often ride on private property, which can cause conflict between riders and property owners.
This weekend's participants, all volunteers, will be led by two experts from the International Mountain Biking Association.
Local volunteers will continue expanding the park over the summer.
During the course they will learn how to build two bridges over the wetland area and giant dirt steps that the cyclists ride down, said Uhlmann.
Businesses donated all the materials including lumber, dirt, woodchips, logs, machinery and power tools. The City's forestry department will transport the supplies to the site. With the free manpower, the project won't cost the City any money.
"If all goes well, riders can begin using the park almost right away," said Uhlmann.
