A planned 500km-sq coalbed methane project near Fernie, British Columbia would directly impact the Fernie Mountain Bike Club's (FMBC) ability to ensure the long-term development and maintenance of the town's world class singletrack.

FMBC is part of a broad coalition asking the British Columbia government to stop BP Canada's Mist Mountain project and preserve Fernie's environment, trails and sustainable recreation economy.

Based on information provided by BP Canada and the provincial government, FMBC cannot support this proposed development. As such, FMBC is supporting efforts by the Fernie-based group Citizens Concerned About Coalbed Methane (CCCBM) to stop the Mist Mountain project. Coalbed methane extraction is ill-suited for Fernie's environment and Mist Mountain would mark the first and only such production in British Columbia.

Fernie is a national and international destination for mountain biking. A coalbed methane project of this magnitude would put a black eye on the community and discourage nature and recreation-oriented tourists from visiting Fernie.
