Alafia Epic Slideshow , Brandon, FloridaWhile some Floridians were attending pre-season baseball games, many of the state's mountain bikers were attending a mid-March IMBA Epic Celebration in Alafia River State Park. The Southwest Association of Mountain Pedalers (SWAMP), one of Florida's largest and most active fat-tire clubs, hosted the event. Alafia State River State Park is located 25 miles south of Tampa and offers some of the best singletrack you'll find anywhere. The diverse terrain dispels any belief that Florida trials are flat and boring. From narrow, technical singletrack to smooth, flowing trails, the Alafia trail system will have any new visitor scratching their head thinking, "I can't believe I'm riding trails like this in Florida." As part of the IMBA Epic Celebration, the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew led a Saturday morning trailwork session that resulted in a new half-mile section and some major improvements to existing trail. SWAMP's experienced Ride Guides led Sunday's Epic ride with a morning tour of Alafia River State Park that covered almost every inch of the park's awesome trails. After a quick break to refuel, riders were treated to the trails on adjacent Boyette Park. The park has miles of beginner- to intermediate-level trails that flow smoothly and offer beautiful scenery. Riding Boyette Park's awesome singletrack was a perfect way to end a truly Epic weekend. The IMBA Epics program is made possible thanks to generous support from Santa Cruz bicycles and Bike Magazine. |
