CCSD presents the Dirty Double

California's premier and toughest double century featuring over 35 miles of packed dirt roads including a packed dirt climb up Mount Palomar. Shorter options available covering 102 miles and 144 miles, or you can tackle the entire double at 201 miles. This is a great challenge for endurance mountain bikers. The course is set up so that mountain bikers can out duel rode bikers.

Packed Dirt Road Information
All packed dirt road information is based on a combination of map analysis and data retrieved from riding the course. The information below and elevation charts for each dirt road only contain information for the dirt sections of the named roads. There may be more climbing and/or descending on pavement for each of the named roads.
Viejas Grade is ~4 miles of packed dirt that starts at mile 3.7 and finishes at mile 8.1. Starting elevation is 2498 feet and finishing elevation is 3662 feet. Total elevation gain is 1164 feet. Average grade is 5.7%. Steepest grade is 7%.
Section note: Short shallow descent on dirt after summit.
Elevation Chart for Dirt Section of Viejas Grade
Boulder Creek is ~13 miles of dirt that starts at mile 13.3 and finishes at mile 27.5. Starting elevation is 3576 feet and finishing elevation is 3673 feet. Total elevation ascent is 1456 feet. Average grade is 4.7%. Steepest grade is 11%.
Section notes: Descent is 1359 feet elevation loss on dirt. Some sections of loose dirt toward road edges, some washboard in the tire lanes, and some gravel towards the bottom of the descent.

Black Canyon is ~11 miles of dirt that starts at mile 58.8 and finishes at mile 68.8. Starting elevation is 1731 feet and finishing elevation is 3297 feet. Total elevation ascent is 1926 feet. Average grade is 4.0%. Steepest grade is 7%.
Section notes: Descent is 360 feet elevation loss on dirt. Some sections of loose dirt toward road edges.
Elevation Chart for Dirt Section of Black Canyon
Nate Harrison is ~7 miles of dirt that starts at mile 95.3 and finishes at mile 102.4. Starting elevation is 1342 feet and finishing elevation is 4791 feet. Total elevation ascent is 3449 feet. Average grade is 9.4%. Steepest grade is 13%.
Section notes: No descent on dirt. Road climbs on pavement before dirt section and for quite a few miles after dirt section. Loose dirt sections on the climb, which may require remaining seated. Low gear selection is important for tackling this climb.

Dirt Road Riding Clinic
By popular demand, CCSD is holding a dirt road riding clinic in the run-up to the Dirty Double! If you are new to dirt road riding or need a refresher on how to ride dirt roads, then join us on June 1 at 3:30pm starting at the Alpine Ayres Inn parking lot. Clinic will be 3 hours in length, including riding.
Enjoy on-the-road clinics as we ride out to Viejas Grade and back, plus after ride clinics on topics, which will improve your performance on the Dirty Devil or similar events.
For Dirty Devil participants, the clinic is included in your registration at no cost. For those not participating in the Dirty Devil, the clinic cost is US$25.00. Register here for the Dirty Devil or the dirt road riding clinic.
