MEC/IMBA Canada Trailbuilding Tour Stops in Victoria, BC
![]() SIMBS President and IMBA Canada Rep James Brown, and other members of the South Island Mountain Bike Society, begin to grub out a new contour bench-cut trail. |

![]() The trail takes shape. This new section will replace a fun piece of singletrack that is being lost to development outside the park. Insloped turns are incorporated to improve trail flow. |
![]() Mount Work - Hartland is a mountain bike paradise, where the moderate climate allows year-round riding. The trail system itself provides a wide variety of beautiful trails, accommodating different levels of use and providing unique natural challenges. |
![]() The technical training area at Mount Work offers a great place for riders to learn kills that are needed to ride some of the more technical trails in the park. |
![]() From rain and cold on Saturday, to sun and blue sky on Sunday, this crew stuck it out to improve the trails they ride. A big thanks to SIMBS, and IMBA Rep James Brown, for making this visit a success! |
With help from Mountain Equipment Co-op's Environment Fund, IMBA Canada is making trail education visits to four provinces. The goal is to promote ecological integrity through sustainable trail management, and ultimately to create more opportunities for human-powered recreation.
The Trailbuilding Tour's most recent visit took place February 3-5, 2006 in Victoria, BC, at the Capital Regional District's Mount Work Regional Park. The incredible trails at Mount Work - Hartland are maintained by the South Island Mountain Bike Society, in partnership with CRD Parks. IMBA Canada's Mark Schmidt led meetings with park managers and conducted a weekend-long IMBA Trailbuilding School.
Over the course of the two-day workshop, 17 people participated to learn the art and science behind sustainable trail management, and to re-route trails that are being lost to development.
Thank you to everyone who attended, and to MEC for making this visit possible.
